Santo Domingo.- Dominican chief executive Leonel Fernandez and Costa Rica’s ex president and Nobel Peace Prize Oscar Arias will preside the Forum for Peace in the Middle East, from March 10 to 12 in Costa Rica’s capital San Jose.
The organizers of the “Latin American Alliance for Peace in the Middle East- the role of Latin America civil societies” announced the activity in Santo Domingo yesterday, hosted by the Global Foundation Democracy and Development (Funglode), headed by Fernandez, and by the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress, headed by Costa Rica’s former chief executive.
The Latin American Social Sciences Faculty (Flacso), civil society, officials of the Central American Foreign Relations ministries, academicians, cultural and political personalities of the world, as well as members and of the Arab and Jewish community in Latin America, the United States, Europe, Israel and Palestinian territories will participate in and support the forum.
In a statement, Funglode Senior adviser Hasan Rahman affirmed that it’s the first time that an event of such vision is organized.

This is a small piece of the international game to try and build diplomatic pressure on the issue. Interesting that the Big Latin States, Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, are not sponsoring the event in their capital. One would think this a ready made event for Brazil's coming out parties, The World Cup and the Olympic Games.

If I am not mistaken, this group met last year in Punta Cana.
Got to love all these folks that traipse around the world, espousing peace and love.
Do you think any of them sees and comprehends the civil protest in Egypt and is alarmed?
How about the nuclear arming of the area?
Another justified trip for the President?
Anyone know the venue?

The death of the Malecon
A candidate for the most beautiful avenue in the Americas, ironically Santo Domingo's seafront Malecon is dying of neglect. In protest, the Santo Domingo Hotel Association has announced the funeral of the Caribbean Sea-bordering Malecon. Hoy newspaper joins the protest, making the point that the suspension of several major works on the Malecon like the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Park, the Fray Anton de Montesinos Monument and Plaza Guibia is evidence of the neglect by the government and city authorities. "The Malecon is an emblematic area. For city residents and foreign visitors it was an entertainment area par excellence. As it has fallen into unjustifiable neglect, the public has stopped frequenting it. The situation justifies an energetic but civic protest," writes the editorialist.

american influnce, democracies do not always do the bidding of the united states, but in the long run they are both more stable and peaceful then countries ruled by the whims of a single man.
democratic transitions are very difficult and uncertain, especially in places with shallow democratic roots.
this in egypt is a popular revolt against an oppressive ruler.

one would think that pres. leo would understand most or some of their problems. he has the same problems in this own back yard.
