Washington.– Haiti's president-elect Michel Martelly won fulsome praise Wednesday from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on a visit to the United States in which he criticized the "desperately slow" reconstruction of his quake-hit nation.

"My new vision for my country is to begin all the useful and necessary reforms," he pledged at a joint press conference after lunching with Clinton at the State Department.

Clinton congratulated Martelly and gave her full backing to the 50-year-old political novice as he looks to turn the desperate situation in his Caribbean homeland around.

"I am very encouraged by the campaign that Mr. Martelly ran, his emphasis on the people and their needs, his willingness to be very clear in what he hoped to achieve on their behalf, and now he has a chance to lead," she said.

Martelly has vowed his first six months as president will focus on moving hundreds of thousands of quake survivors out of squalid tent cities, tackling a resilient cholera epidemic, and boosting agricultural production.

He also met in Washington on Tuesday with the heads of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Let's see how long he can keep his pants up. In all seriousness, I hope that this guy does start Haiti along the path of good governance. DR will also be big winners if he does.

He's not out of the woods!

He's only got three deputies out of 99; while Préval's Inité party won 46 seats.

How is he going to have his government and Prime Minister approved?

Word's not out yet about the Senate, but projections are 17 senators out of 30 to Préval's party.

Winds of change, really??

This LOSER petit garcon is always putting us down; he already forgot that the D.R. was the first country to respond to the earth quake in Haiti, and we still helping them by taking all those starving Haitians, sick Haitians, pregnant Haitian women by the truck load.

Mr danny00 I would like to punch you in the face for all the CRAP you talk about us.
Without D.R. the Haitian people would've been eating themselves, and I say this without trying to offend anybody, it's just the reallity of us as a nation that being a 3rd world country, we still support more than 2 million Haitians.

...and no, YOU ARE NOT DOMINICAN, TU NO ERES DOMINICANO, OU PA DOMINIKEN, SIE SIND NICHT DOMINIKANISCHE..

This man Martelly has sent out arrest warrants for the election committee and a bunch of other people suspected in fraud. Maybe this man will be the man to turn Haiti around. Haiti has the hardest working people and the Haitian diaspora is one of the most successful and affluent. Corruption and Fraud is the only holding the small island nation from progressing. Let us keep our fingers crossed.
