Taipei.– Arelis Gabot, a Dominican Republic
native, who immigrated to Taiwan seventeen years-ago is now the proud
title holder of the first non-ethnic Taiwanese to hold public office, The China Post reported.
After receiving her
Taiwanese citizenship in February this year, Gabot was qualified to
hold the position of Neighborhood Chief of East Gate's sixteenth
neighborhood.
In March she was formally inducted to her new position
under the supervision of East Gate Ward Chief, Liu Chao-ling.
“As neighborhood chief all I want to do is service those around me and
be able to make others happy,” she told The China Post.
Coming to Taiwan after being
married to her husband for five years, Gabot was immediately put at a
disadvantage because of her lack of Chinese language abilities. However,
she quickly took up the challenge and is now virtually fluent in the
language.

Why are Dominicans so good in Politics?

Why are Dominicans so good in Politics? You ask. Because BS flows so freely here.

I wonder how she services those around her and makes them Happy???

Too many nay sayers here (and rather low brow blue humor from one), I'm glad there are still good images of Dominicans abroad.
Many East Asian societies are quite xenophobic in a rather benign manner, to hold any office in such a society as a obvious foreigner is impressive.

No offense but what is a "Neighborhood Chief of East Gate's sixteenth neighborhood." ?
Pardon the ignorance but it sounds to me like she is in charge of the neighborhood crime watch team or is she in charge of the block party?
I mean when I first read the title it gave the impression as though she was the mayor or council person of a local township, but the "16th neighborhood?" Anyway, regardless of the level of achievement it is still an accomplishment for a Dominican in a society that is generally close to foreigners.

What I want to know is how a Dominican ends up all the way in Taiwan? Talk about a wrong turn on the road to El Cibao.

Chico, it is stated in the last paragraph. She married a Taiwanese and relocated with her husband. Now talk about a love of Chinese food............

Chico you remind me of this guy who hired a private detective because he thought his wife was cheating on him. The investigator reported that after he left for work a male came to pick up the wife. and aftewards went out to lunch and then a walk in the park.
What happened later he asked? Well they went shoping for jewelry and later to a flower stand and he bought her a bouquet. Well what happened next, again he asked? Well, they both went back to the house for a change of clothes and out they left again. Well what happened after, again he ask? Well, the guy, drove to a motel, they checked in, got the key and both went into the room. Well what happened next, he insisted?
The detective responded, well I don't know what actually happened inside the room, all I know is a couple of hours later they checked out and he drop her back home. So you don't know what took place inside the room, he asked the detective. No I don't, he responded. Carajo, todavia me quedo con las dudas.

Guillermone her husband could be from God knows what country. It doesn't specify the man is Taiwanese. He could be euro or even Domo for all we know. Your PI example is a poor one...

Oh my God chico !!!!!!
Come on, Por Favor. You can make an assumption. Just look at the whole picture, there is a 99% chance that the husband is from Taiwan. There is no other greater or more powerful motive other then "Love" to make a person want to leave their native country and culture, move all the way to the other side of the world and become a sore thumb among people who are completely and totally different from you. She had no choice, got fully inmerse in the culture, became a citizen and involved in politics. There is no other reason a person would do that unless she married a native Tawanese.
Yet you still doubt and the reason why you remind me of the guy that does not believe his wife cheated on him. Even though she checked in a motel room with a male, he still doubts his wife has been unfaithful. He needs to actually see her bed with another man to be convinced. Well you are the same, you need to see it in print, spelled out, Mrs Gabot married a Taiwanese to believe.

Her moving for love is a very likely and logical reason but it does not mean we should assume her husband is Taiwanese. I know that personally since my wife did it for me. However her husband could be a foreigner as well who moved to Taiwan for business or economic reasons.
From: United States
Yes, that is possible, but when when you move for business it is usually temporary. The only reason anyone would remain permanently in a foreign country is because one of the two has deep roots in that place. Since there is no choice and realized she was never going back to the DR, the next best thing was to join, become part of the culture and get involved in politics.
Her example should be a lesson for the Dominican diaspora in the US. If we know and realize a return to our native land will not happen any time soon the best thing for us to do like Ms Gabot, learn the language, get educated and become involved in politics. We will get noticed, become an important and a powerful segment of the community.
