Michel Martelly.

Port-au-Prince.– After being sworn as Haiti's new president today, Michel Martelly faces a mammoth task: inheriting a shattered Caribbean nation haunted by recent disaster and decades of political turmoil.

The troubled country of less than 10 million people, half of whom live off less than two dollars a day, garnered international attention in January 2010 when it was struck by one of the deadliest earthquakes of all time.

Over 225,000 people were killed and one in seven of the population rendered homeless when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake turned what was already the poorest country in the Americas into a full-on disaster zone.

The sudden return in January of former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier after 25 years in exile and then in March of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Haiti's first democratically-elected president, reopened old wounds.

This presents something of a poisoned chalice to Martelly, a 50-year-old former carnival singer and political novice who rose unexpectedly to power with a hope-filled campaign that promised a rupture from Haiti's violent past.

As long as these fascists do something for the people while they gain more riches is better then the alternatives...

These type fascists are the same ones running the US hence why we are in the situation we are in right now but at least we still have some sort of fighting chance, unlike Haiti's population.

One positive factor is that President Martelly won election convincingly with strong support from his country's poor majority. One hopes that Haiti's elite, whose candidate lost and cried fraud, will come around and support the majority's choice. The US seems to be giving Martelly strong public support. What it's doing behind the scenes, I don't know.

lol...you my friend do not know what you are talking about.

1. the poor majority did not vote....and choose NONE OF THE ABOVE by staying home.

2. Only 27% of eligible voters went to the polls.

3. Both Aristide and Preval received far more votes than Martelly.

4. Martelly IS the candidate of the US/France/OAS and the elite.

Antichrist -- Thanks for your interesting information and insights. I keep reading these comment pages because I keep learning from some of the posts.

Although I have visited Haiti (years ago) and have done some reading on the situation, what I don't know greatly exceeds what I do know. I will look further into the points you raise.

Hellborn -- Your paranoia about Haiti wanting to take over the DR is about as realistic as people in the US worrying about Mexico plotting a takeover of Texas or Arizona.

"4. Martelly IS the candidate of the US/France/OAS and the elite."

True. But guess who has all the golden eggs? So, you either play the game, and in so doing make the most of it for the majority-low paying jobs pay more than NO JOBS-or continue to gorge yourself from the earth cookies. Hard facts, but nevertheless real and I hope that for Haiti's sake, this Martelly character has a productive and institutionally significant impact on Haiti forward projection. Exports, Exports and then more Exports should drive the substantial resources needed in social spending: schools, housing, sanitation, and other basic infrastructural needs.

An interesting recent article on Haitian immigration to the DR by historian Frank Moya Pons. I'm not sure I agree with all of it, but it is illuminating and he is one of the country's most respected historians. The article is in Spanish from Diario Libre, but you can probably use Google translator to see an English version.

I'm a proud American from Dominican and Cuban decent.
I grew up on W 172nd & Broadway yes in the Heights cabron get familiar !

You keep coming with dismal stories that you can't back up. Like the Unification of haitians & dominicans. That can NEVER happen.... It's Like asking Sammy Sosa what color he is... C'mom HellCrabon say something productive next time !

Besides you, I don't know any real Dominicans who does not want Haiti to succeed. Or myabe it's the Cubano in me... If Haiti succeed as a country then it will solve the border problem .... But your IQ clearly does not copy that !

And yes I'm a liberal, proud to be who I am. Didn't know we were playing the race card until you mention it ...Gringo!

Have you been living under a rock , or have you been in a coma the past 6 years , claims I cant back up? bro google your friend martelly and you will see exacly what iam talking about , this are his words he wants to unite haiti and dominican republic , all this is base on the haiti earthquake and the fact that haiti is running out of options on how to save there economy , asking sammy sosa what color he is you say? what does that have to do with the subject of the unification of two different countries, that speak two different languages , have two different believe systems ? did you take that into account when you just decided to just compare skin colors ? just by that silly analogy , just proves how stupid liberal retards like you are.

mira hijo de tu maldita abuela de teta , if a country like haiti that gain indepenced in the year 1804 and to this day has not solved the economy or infrastructured or border problems for that matter , what makes you think michel martelly will save haiti and suddenly have haiti succeed ??? you have something that alot of your liberal brothers suffer from something that I like to call delusions of grandeur.

Very interesting video, but at least two points need to be made:

1. Martelly seemed to be talking more about eliminating restrictions on travel and trade between the two countries than about unifying DR and Haiti under a common government. The European Union has done this within Europe, but each country still has its own separate government. The border between US and Canada is mostly open, although IDs need to be shown.

2. Even if Martelly wanted a common government -- which I don't think he does -- it's not going to happen, just as proposals to solve the Israel-Palestine conflict by unifying Israel, the West Bank and Gaza into a single state under a common government is not going to happen.

Whatever Martelly says, it is in the DR's interest that Haiti get back on its feet and that the two countries trade with each other and cooperate in areas such as eradicating diseases, protecting natural resources and the environment and disaster planning.

UNFORTUNATELY...that is not the plan.

Martelly like Wicleff was selected by the IRI and represents Haiti's mercantile elite.........no local production...just import...import...import.

They want to impose a neo-liberal trade poliy on a barely breathing economy for the benefit of the local elite and US exporters of rice and other things.

At the same time keeping the NGO stronghold on the country.

So expect more poor haitians to run to the Dominican border.
