Santo Domingo.– In a historic achievement and after sixty days of hard work, two Dominicans have conquered the world's tallest Mount Everest and hoisted the national flag on the summit.

According to International Mountain Guides, Karim Mella and Ivan Gomez made it to the top Friday 20 May at 8:30 pm. Mella became the first Dominican to climb Mount Everest.

Third man on the Dominican expedition, Federico Jovine, who had suffered from bronchitis, did not make it the last stretch.

Gentlemen,

Heartfelt congratulations on this personal achievement of human endurance; also, for doing something positive to elevate our nation to heights usually reserved for richer and better known countries.

It is absolutely most refreshing to hear news of our beloved nation that has nothing to do with LF, Figueroa Agosto, corruption [LF], drug trade, the continued raping of our natural resources and transfer of same to heartless and greedy foreign owners, and military criminal activity, not to mention our bottom-of-the-pit justice system.

You make us very proud!

Again, congratulations! And thank you.

MJEV.

this is a magnificent achievement for these interpid souls. bearing in mind that they are from a country where ice is best reserved for cuba libre, just acclimatising the body to those temperatures at the summit is a feat in a class by itself. i wish them a safe trip down.

A good effort but hardly inspirational.
The mountain has been successfully climbed by a 13-year-old and a 76-year-old. Another has climbed it 21 times, and another took less than 17 hours from Camp III. It has also been conquered by the blind and amputees.

I'd like to see a list of countries that have not climbed
Mt Everest - pretty short I would imagine. Has Santo Domingo become deserted now, with everyone now training on Pico Duarte? The proper name is Monte Tina, first climbed in 1851 by a Brit. and first time by Dominican in 1944!
Dominicans are more inspired by daring crimes.

I find more inspiring the first man to conquer it was
New Zealander Edmund Hillary, although he never claimed credit, but rather said it was he and his co-climber Tenzing Norgay. Hilary subsequently devoted much of his life and his fortune to the Nepalese folk of the area.

C'mon Roy, quit being such a hater.
You make it seem like anyone can climb Everest.
These fine men can be used as role models for some Dominican kids. Agreed?

True though that Hillary and Tenzing did it without oxygen tanks, almost always used today.

walnut,
I am not a "hater" - I am a lover of the DR -
that's why some things make me very sad. The huge, wasted potential.
If this mountain climb inspires Dominican kids then I am all for it. However how many actually know about it?
For many DR kids they see their only route to fame, wealth and prestige is to be a successful base-ball player, politician or thief. (Some say the last two are the same).

hellborn25,
Who's record books? Thousands of unknowns had already climbed Mt Everest as well as blind, young, old, disabled, etc.
Apart from base-ball players and a despotic dictator, DR has very few world-famous citizens. Oh yes I forgot to mention - some employee at NASA.

abc200,
A bit late?
Hey, no Dominican climbed DR's highest hill unto 1944 - nearly a century after the first Gringo (British) did it, and 4 1/2 centuries after Columbus first set foot on DR!
Dominicans don't do anything in a hurry (except when driving a car).

@Roy,

Hey Roy,

It is really not good practice to generalize all the time. There are many of us who go about our pursuit of significant accomplishments without seeking limelight, like our notorious president. Many of us just go on on doing the right thing, without seeking publicity or acknowledgement.

glomarexplorer,
You are correct.
In Australia we call them "quiet achievers".
Unfortunately in the media, and perhaps the public eye, those who make significant achievements in science, medicine, humanitarianism, etc, rarely make the headlines. But if one unlikely baseball team beats another, or some movie star goes into rehab, that's big news.
I must ask, what does MJEV mean?

@RoyStone, no Dominican reached el Pico Duarte until 1944 true, but we where the first ones to set a flag up there.

I willing to bet it's a lonely 60 year old hard-up hairy male freak in his basement who hasn't had it since it had him looking for some side action.

I also bet his name is IWANTIT or INEEDIT or I"MDESPERATE or GOTTOHAVEIT.

Good thing the DT posters haven't fallen for it.
