Por-au-Prince.– Haitian officials have reacted sceptically to a draft US report that questioned both the death toll in last year's devastating earthquake and the numbers left homeless.

The draft report suggests that many of those still living in squalid tent cities did not lose their homes in the disaster.

The report, dated May 13 and yet to be released, estimates the number of fatalities at 46,190 to 84,961, challenging the commonly accepted death toll of 250,000 people.

Matador, EXACTLY!!! Gracias. Not only are they now getting aid , Haiti has had more assistance than any other nation in the hemisphere. For what? Never any progress, always asking for more and never held responsible to do anything other than breed like stray cats. A nation that pilfers it's own then blames Dominicans for protectiing our country.
Haiti was a mess BEFORE the earthquake. Haiti will always be a mess. Now the illegals are determined to destroy DR. Not as long as I have life will I be silent. Never.
Haiti is a backward nation incapable of progress. Shameless. The wealthy Haitians live quite well in rented apts in the capital on the money they stole from their own people.

I think that the death toll numbers were given without any empirical evidence.... well, Hell, it's haiti we're talking about; now the world wants to stop wasting money on these people and it becomes acceptable to ask how did haiti arrived at those number. Do you all understand how this question is political suicide to have been asked right on the aftermath of the quake. Now there's empirical evidence that haiti isn't benefiting from the borrowed help and it's time to stop misspending.

CarmenReyes, you're right of course... I have been saying this for as long as my DT membership exists....

"The unpublished report puts the death toll between 46,000 and 85,000. Haiti's government says about 316,000 died.

It also suggests many of those still living in tent cities did not lose their homes in the disaster.

Haitian authorities have stood by the figures released last year.

The draft report, which has yet to be released publicly, is based on a survey commissioned by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and draws its numbers from door-to-door surveys carried out over 29 days in January 2011.

But US State Department spokeswoman Preeti Shah told the Associated Press News Agency the report had inconsistencies and would not be released until they were resolved.

Analysts say the new figures could challenge the premise of a multi-billion-dollar aid and reconstruction effort."

Very bad news for Haiti. It appears that International Aid may well fall short of what was expected. What nation will suffer the consequences after Haiti? Get ready for more bla
