Buenos Aires.– Dominican Republic is among the 11 Latin American nations that now stand behind an international agreement calling for a ban on hunting whales.

Representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay signed the agreement in Buenos Aires, during a meeting to prepare for the annual International Whaling Commission conference in July in the United Kingdom.

The agreement would only allow for controlled hunting, strictly for scientific and research purposes without killing the mammals.

Sick are the people that still participate in that barbarism.

As governments, "fishermen" or consumers.

As long as the species is not in danger of extinction(And the vast majority of cetaceans aren't) a have no problem with a managed harvest.

The above mentioned countries, not the least DR, violating the human rights of their population on a daily basis in just about all aspects, however protection of whales are high up on their agenda. International corruption that is.
I see a lot of ignorance from the comments - I can assure you guys whale meat is excellent - got about 15K in my freezer - best BBQ - maybe these governments could buy some of our stock of whale meat to hand out to the poorest - would make everyones day and great nutrition. We will keep killing the whales along with other animales on this planet within a sustainable harvest. Enough talking - need to go BBQ jam jam.

i am in full support of hunting whales for food. just because some white folks are amused by the creatures, does not mean that we in the Caribbean have to sign up to foolish agreements. The cow is a sacred animal in India but its killed for meat the world over. what double standards.

I hate the killing of whales and porpoises and lions and tigers and elephants and am very glad that nearly all the world is getting behind the ban ...there is quite enough pigs, goats, and cattle to eat already

Hey Ricky, you go up high when you take the world for the benefit of your views. I thought you were a person who used your intelligence rather than your emotions. I completely agree with you that killing animals for sport is very "unsportsmanlike" so to speak. Most of the countries mentioned above were mostly raped by Spain, which is why not many people or traditions left over from those who lived before the Spaniards took over. However, bullfighting continues in some of these countries who are against whaling, in the best of Spanish tradition. But, of course, one must protest against whaling, barbaric as it is.

cont.

Politicians in these countries give their vote only to be abundantly rewarded, Latin-American style. They couldn, t care less about Whaling.

The vast majority of countries engaged in whaling are also the best country in the world to live in. Be it human rights, social services and law and order among other things. . Whaling is a thousand year old tradition to survive, at times, and not a barbaric game of pleasure.

Why do you hate the killing of Whales, Porpoises(But Not Dolphins?) Lions, Tigers and Elephants but not pigs, goats, and cattle?

What is your reasoning? Most Whales, Porpoises and Dolphins along with Lions & Elephants are not endangered so it can't be that.
Lions breed like rats in captivity. The only one really endangered are Tigers and that is because of Habitat destruction and not harvesting.

So why do you "hate" it?

The types of whales hunted for their meat are in abundance and it's strictly controlled. Their not hunted for "Sport." Whale meat is nutritious and good; it tastes very much like steak. in the countries that hunt and eat whale, it's been a part of their diet for hundreds of years. comparing the hunting of whales to that of elephants or tigers is disingenuos. In Norway, where i live part of the year, Whale meat is a part of the diet for many people. However, Norway, doesn't indiscriminately kill whatever whales they come across; it's controlled by the government. a quoto is set and its striclty adhered too in Norway. I think it was the BBC that did a documentary on Greenpeace and their campaign against Whale hunting. They found Greenpeace to be greatly exaggerating the whale quotas and using the whale agenda to generate huge donations to saving the whales despite the fact that the type off whales being hunted for their meat were a particular species and in abundance. frank , the Japanese have been accused of killing species that are endangered and to anthonyC , yes I include dolphins also and the reason is that I do not like killing by man over the entire animal kingdom but would prefer it limited to just a few like chickens, cattle and pigs .

I really do believe that the animals in the photo are dolphins or porpoises. And the country that enslaves, slaughters, and eats the most is the japanese..... they'll eat anything witha fin!

When the cold war ended and the dirty secrets of both nato and the soviets emerged, one of the typical accounts of harm to all mankind as proscribed by communism surfaced in regard to commercial whaling activities. The soviets admitted to harvesting triple their allocated quota far exceeding the limits thought to be required for sustained whale populations.

Whales should be left alone for the next hundred years. There are other sources of food on this earth.

And another reason to detest castro the communist nuclear blackmailer, raul the communist kick you in the head murderer and of course that broken mindless chaveeeee the commie how quick can i do something stupid to undermine everyone and take their freedom ....

As to the greenlanders, norweigians, japanese, koreans, russians and whoever else, you are just as bad as the commies to keep doing the same. ...
