Santo Domingo.- An article in this week’s issue of Time Magazine focuses on the progress made in the fight against drug trafficking in the Dominican Republic.

The article “Why it’s no longer raining cocaine in the Dominican Republic” hails the 2009 decision by Dominican president Leonel Fernández to purchase eight Super Tucano aircraft from Brazil as “an unusually worthwhile drug-war investment. Since taking delivery of the planes in 2009, the Dominican Air Force says it has driven away drug flights to the point that they no longer enter the country's airspace.”

The article says that despite the fact that the Dominican Republic was being used as a transshipment point to the United States, the authorities did not receive the support it needed from Washington and had to take out a large loan  of US$93.7 million from the Brazilian government to purchase the planes.

Drug flights no longer bombard the country with their consignments, according to Time, which also cites White House Office of National Drug Control Policy figures: “In 2008, as much as 73 metric tons of cocaine passed through the D.R., but by 2010 that number had fallen to 13 tons… and much if not most of that reduction resulted from improved air interdiction.”

The downside, however, according to National Drug Control Department (DNCD) spokesman Roberto Lebrón, is that traffickers have resorted to using the sea instead of the air: "Our problem now is that traffickers are infiltrating our coasts with boat shipments of drugs. We've managed to cut the flights, but it's created other problems."

Jim quite amazing , I always believed the greatest demand for drugs was from the USA and if this demand ceased most of the drug transits in the DR would stop ..just shows how poorly informed I was.
And I like the dear old planes in the photo and I really never realised that people read TIME still except in the dentist lounges

The DR take out a large loan of US$93.7 million from the Brazilian government to purchase the 8 planes.

These planes do not cost 12 million dollars each.

Some Politician and General are probably rubbing their fat bellies saying how stupid the general population in the DR is.

Well now the narcos are flying low, slow and with night vision.

These planes are useless at low speeds, low altitude and at night.

What they should have done was start charging politicians with fraud and throwing away the key.

Corruption is inbred in the Dominican Republic.

@JimHarrington,
Currently, it seems like they cost 10 million a piece. I imagine that the rest of the money covers armament, spare parts and/or training.

I wonder why Jimmy has to come on this website and spread his shit as if it were butter on bread. He ruins everything. Why do you care? You're not Dominican. You probably don't live there and you probably to not pay taxes our government. Why do you give a crap. You're just an asshole that feels bad because his country, ayti is one messed up place. I bet he used to work in the Dominican Republic doing who knows what and that's why he feels so bad.

don't worry my old DT friend

leonilo is working on a 150 millions USD to commission the purchase of 25 brand new Navy destroyers arm with heavy artillery, radar and nuclear powered engines to keep up with the speed boats the drug cartels use for delivering the blow.
the destroyers only cost 75 millions but you know how leonilo and his goons do business, after all he is the best president DR has ever seen.

Education coupled with increased security helps reduce the infiltration of drugs. The government must also put money into educating its young people. Higher education can help protect communities from drugs. There are no choices or job opportunities for the uneducated or underpaid for that matter. I have seen a lot of improvements in DR, however, there is no difference for the poor. On the contrary, now these communities must deal with the druggies, and deported criminals in addition to living in poverty. DR is under siege. We need to do better.

Give me a break!!!! There is more drugs spots then groceries stores in my country nowadays; Globalization surplus impacted directly into the wrong turn in our society! I can not say anything positive at this point! "The economic growth " has made us more vulnerable then any other country. Corruption is what the government protects people is not longer their priority no investment on education, heath care everything goes in the "politicians projects like a Zoeberto Park" Like permanent water and electricity for the deaths. They just care about shipping in international investments no matter if is legal or not. Some other country have to come and implant their political strategy the president in never home. They want to privatized everything. We consume more international products like drugs then locals. This makes me vomits. I want my old country back. And to continue this mess we have the worst political popular parties as top runners.

I want to be able to see the blue sky of my capital. I hate seeing my neighbores selling their house to a drug dealer to build a 10 story apartment building. Kids on their street telling me that they want to cross the Mona channel to make it like that guy who make that building. That is OK to sell drugs or been a drug dealer because look at the cars and the places were drugs dealers have the chance to enjoy. And anyways if the politicians are why we can be like so and so? Look at Leonel and Hipolito they say. The dealer carried drugs on officials planes and cars! I dislike having a real talk with people that I grow up with; that thing are not as what they may imagine!

WAR on Drugs, this is ridiculous as the US goverment OPPOSED a LAW to shot down planes!!! a SOVEREING decision of the DR that was blocked because this sissy president just bent over and took it... this was just released on wikileaks last week so the HYPOCRESY grows wild on this!!!

SUPERTUCANOS are USELESS since the only utility of a war plane is the capability to shot down or eliminate another plane therefore IF supertucanos can't shot down planes, what a Fu*k do we need them for???

@airgordo,
Thank you for the links. However, what do you think about the aircraft that was shot down recently? It almost seems that, some kind of agreement was reach were the USA keeps providing the intel/logistical support, while at the same time, the DR gets to shoot down suspected aircrafts. Or do you think this was a one time message to the drug cartels? -- Thanks

i don't think that a helicopter like the colibris, Bells or the old vietnam Hueys that we have could have shot down a plane, so i really doubt this happened as the report says, and if i remember correctly it was later determined that the plane went down by itself after some mechannical faults...
