Miami.– Hurricane Sandy was downgraded to a tropical storm on Saturday as it inched toward the US East Coast and after leaving 44 people dead in the Caribbean.

Sandy, which has been dubbed "Frankenstorm," was expected to make landfall somewhere between Virginia and Massachusetts. Early on Saturday, it was about 560km southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, packing maximum sustained winds of 110km/h and moving north at 17km/h.

In the Dominican Republic, 12,581 people were displaced and 1,149 homes affected by the torrential rains. The hurricane also caused power outages and forced schools to be closed throughout most of the country.

"and forced schools to be closed throughout most of the country."

There was abosolutely no reason why schools in the east were closed. Time for regions to make decisions based on what is happening.

Do you think that in Cuba...where they had a direct hit...that they closed "all schools"???
