Michael Del Rey, Reporting from theBeverly Hilton Hotel
Beverly Hills, California.- On the eve of the music industry's biggest night 48 year old Whitney Houston has died at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Cause of death is not known. What is known is Ms. Houston has battled drug addiction for years. Once the darling of the music industry her career has been in sharp decline for the past decade.
Music executive Clive Davis who annually throws his Pre-Grammy party at the very same hotel where Ms. Houston died today was also the man who discovered Ms. Houston and signed her to his record label Arista Records decades ago. Ms. Houston is a multi Grammy award winner. Her sudden death on the eve of the Grammy Awards Sunday night in Los Angeles is sure to cast a cloud over the evenings celebration.

Sad in deed she passed away only less then 60 miles from my home. Two of the most remembered songs were "Greatest love of all" and the National Anthem sung in the super bowl, she sang it with pride, honor and respect.

How sad and unfortunate to see people like Whitney unable to handle money and fame. Instead of using it for something positive, succumb to self-destructive behavior. She is just one unfortunate example of the many who are easily able to attain great success, but only few really know how to make the best use of it.
When I heard the story of her passing, I was not at all surprise. For years we have been hearing about her odd behavior and unorthodox public appearances as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. In spite of her accomplishments, she fell victim to addiction and consequently ruined her health until her unfortunate death.
Whitney was not the first nor will she be the last. There are many bright stars who quickly reach meteoric fame but some how success led to their downfall in personal as well as professional lives. It seems as if they sold their souls to the devil. He gives them everything a human wants and desires, until eventually he comes to collect.

"Cause of death is not known"
She drowned in the bath. Drugs? suicide? they are not saying anything at least until the autopsy is carried out - after the awards.
You don't get to the top in that industry without a huge ego. That same ego makes the inevitable descent that follows, intolerable for many. Despite short lives, many would gladly exchange their long and uneventful lives for theirs, hence the voyeuristic fascination many have for these celebrities.
It is interesting to see the accolades from her rivals after her death, and compare it with the venomous attacks she had to endure from them when still alive. Now everyone was her dearest friend.

"Certainly wealth and fame does not always bring satisfaction and happiness, but poverty and obscurity always brings frustration and sadness."
Yes true, however we notice it more on high profile people because media has the capacity to focus and pay exclusive attention on them and can amplify the severity of the individual tragedy. But let us remember extremes are never good and ironically most people are ill prepared to experience either one. It is evident to see that both poverty and wealth has its drawbacks. That is why I always advocate balance, moderation and equanimity in almost everything. We clearly see and observe the principles of balance and order, prevalent and fixated within the universal laws of nature. If this balance is ever disrupted, chaos is created and the outcome is never good. (continue)
From: United States
This same principle can be applied to the average person and as such must never break the harmony within themselves, but rather strive to maintain a balance as the only way to achieve true success.
The entertainment and sports industries are replete with similar examples where individuals after having achieved fame later see success turn into their downfall. There are plenty of stories where people were unable to make best use of personal gains, but also deal with loss. It is not at all unusual to hear about even the moderately successful end up in the gutter. They some how lose their mental state and as a consequence are found begging on the streets, unable to deal with failure, fall to the bottom. I guess their sense of self-worth was based on what they materially possess rather than who they are deep down as an individual. (continued)

Even though what I mentioned ascertains the difficulty for the successful to keep their sanity, there is however plenty of others who did not allow success get to their head and used it rather to their best advantage.
Oprah Winfrey is one of the best examples of how a very successful individual kept her two feet on the ground and used her great wealth unselfishly to benefit the most needy and not so needy as well. She did not lose sense of who she was and remained humble, real and always true to herself and others.

The difference between Ritchie Valenens and Jimi Hendricks has for more to do with their talent than how they died. Valens could barely play the guitar, couldn't sing, never wrote anything original and was a 2-hit wonder. Hendrix is arguably the most innovative and influential electric guitarist ever, composed an enormous and varied original repertoire, and changed the course of popular music. He may have died as a result of a reckless lifestyle, but to say he died "at [his] own hands" implies suicide which was certainly not the case.

well, you're right.. there is a lot of valuable people in this world that aren't celebrated when they die. There are A LOT of talented musicians in this world that will never get the chance, and a lot of really badly paid teachers, and other workers for society that are simply ignored. And there are thousands of kids dying everyday due to hunger, and curable illnesses, not only in Africa but here in our backyards. So, it is definitely unfair and ridiculous to mourn someone who purposely put themselves in the risk of dying and then we don't mourn people that are truly innocent of their circumstance. But regardless, Whitney was a life, people should always mourn the death of someone, regardless of who it is, because it's not in our hands to decide who lives and who dies, who's fair and who isn't, that's God's job to judge. And not only that, but Whitney, she had a voice, a great voice. A voice for which many singers would kill! She had a wonderful talent, and...
