New York.– Current Dominican laws
allow for Dominicans overseas to vote in presidential election, and so close is the race that the candidates' campaigns are courting
Dominicans abroad, suggesting that they could make the
difference in electing the next president, huffingtonpost.com reported.
The online paper refers that on June 7, 2011, President Fernandez signed
a law that gives Dominicans abroad seven seats in the Dominican
Congress, with the possibility of five of the seven congressional seats
elected in the US, including Puerto Rico.
The US 2010 Census ranked the
Dominican population in the US,
with over 1.4 million people, the fourth highest Latino group in the
nation. New York, with over 800,000 Dominicans has most of the
Dominican in the US. Other states with high Dominican concentration
are: New Jersey, Florida, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Both Danilo Medina (PLD) and Hipolito Mejia (PRD) spent the last week of Easter traveling through
the eastern part of the US, attending fundraisers and large events, and
letting Dominicans in the US know the importance they now play in the
Dominican electorate process, the paper said.
According to the report, with more than 220,000 registered
Dominican voters in the US eligible to vote in the May 20th election, Dominicans in the US
make up more voters than 27 of the 31 provinces in the country. The
total number of Dominicans registered to vote overseas stands at 5
percent of the total voting population of 6.5 million.

I have a problem with this. If you live IN the DR...you vote...if not...sorry. Most left this country because they were not happy. Few...if any would return...regardless of politics.
I am Canadian...I do not vote in Canadian elections..although I could. Yesterday was yesterday...when or if I return to Canada...i will then vote.

I think most countries have the law that ,aslong as the person remains a citizen of the country havingthe electon , then that person can vote, no matter where they may be living ,,Most countries do not permit prisoners to vote and some do not permit the armed forces to vote

PuntaCanaMike,
I beg to differ. I think ex-pat Dominicans perhaps have even more right to vote, since they contribute more to the country's GDP (both per-capita and as a group) than those still living in the county. Of course if we follow that rationale redutio ad absurdum, tourists should have the greatest right to vote, since the contribute the most.

Interesting points, Ricky.
In my view, members of the armed forces should not be denied the vote, since they can be affected the most by any whim of government. If prisoners are denied the vote, then there is a motive for governments to use wrongful incarceration to bias elections.

I believe they do have a say. They do contribute to the economy with remittanses sent to support homeland family. Also, they invest in purchases of businesses and homes for the family or for their present or future plans, ie: retirement. They do have a concern for the political environment that affects their family members.
They have a vested interest with the political outcome of their home country and therefore should have the vote.

No need to follow the argument "redutio ad absurdum." The DR Constitution provides a legal basis on which to defend your position.

Roy,
I'm referring to the Constitutional law that stipulates that all lawful Dominicans, regardless of their foreign citizen status do not lose their status as Dominicans. So for those hundreds of thousands of Dominicans residing in the USA, Canada, other parts of Latin America, Europe and Asia, they have the right to vote. And even their children retain the right to Dominican citizenship regardless of where they were born.
This was explained to me by the Dominican Consul in Praha, Czech Republic this past Sunday.
