New York.- The United Nations General Assembly will hold on Wednesday a high level debate on financial speculation and volatility of the prices of foods and other staples, the UN announced Monday.
Assembly rotating president Nasir Abdulaziz Al Naser of Qatar said the debate seeks a broad, international consensus to reduce the excessive volatility of food prices and the speculation in the commodities markets.
He said the upcoming debate was spurred by an initiative from Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez, approved by the General Assembly in December and will especially deal with the human right to an adequate standard of living and health and wellbeing.
In addition to Fernandez, some of the ministers from 192 countries, executives, and independent international experts will participate in the plenary session slated for April 11.

Wow, the United Nations had never considered people's "standard of living health and wellbeing" before Leonel's speech. Makes you wonder what they've been talking about since 1945, and why they set up the International Fund for Agricultural Development, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, World Food Programme and the World Health Organization. At last, as a result of a Dominican initiative, they now know what they're for. This has got to be another feather in the cap of this world-leading nation, and making Fernandez a legend in his own imagination.

Makes me sick to to see the constant stream of negative comments from many, but Josean in particular.. Cant you guys see the big picture?????? That Hipolito trashed the country , stole it blind, last time around??? How many have seen his mansion in Jarabacoa??? Meija was a thief, and wants to get back in power to steal again. The World Bank was on the verge of shutting this country down, when Meija was booted out of office just in time

derek,
Have you seen the personal check Lie-onel Fernandez cashed for $500,000 pesos from the International Dominican Drug Lord?
Have you seen Lie-onel's picture with the International Spanish Drug Lord in the National Palace?
Why hasn’t Lie-onel answered Hippo's open letter regarding the BANINTER collapse, the bank where Lie-onel was a consultant and where he got his money to start FUNGOLDE?
Why did the US embassy call Lie-onel’s rhetoric regarding the banking crisis (which you are repeating here) SLICK and EVASIVE?
Why does the truth make you sick derek?
Since when did pointing out the truth become negative?

Derek,
I think than even beggars at the traffic-lights, who have never been on the internet, know about Josean's dislike of the PLD. Perhaps not quite so well-known is his dislike of the PRD and his preference for Moreno. If more Dominican voters were of the same view, then this country may be saved. Unfortunately for you, they don't, so it won't. The only question to be resolved at the election is how fast it will go down - perhaps at about the same rate as it is now with Danelo, or faster with Hippo.
This used to make me sad, but I learned to overcome it by seeing the humor in it. As many here have been so keen to point out, unlike them, I don't need to stay here.
Happy election. One dead already and many days still to go.
