Santo Domingo.- The
president of France, Francois Hollande, has formally asked the
president-elect of the Dominican Republic to continue working with the French government
on both governments’ joint policy of supporting reconstruction in Haiti, .
In a letter addressed to Danilo
Medina, the French head of state wrote that the reconstruction of Haiti after the
devastating January 2010 earthquake is one of the challenges that needed to be
faced by the international community.
In this context, he adds, it
is important for the Dominican Republic and France to continue being actively
involved in this process, as they have done up till now.
Hollande mentioned that he
had the opportunity to express his wish to the current Dominican president,
Leonel Fernández, to strengthen relations of friendship between the French and
Dominican peoples, which he defined as important and diverse.
He said that some joint
initiatives had been established in trade and investment, international cooperation
and higher education as well as in security matters and the fight against drug
trafficking.
He observed that at a
regional level, France shares common interests in the Caribbean due to its
Overseas Departments, especially Guadeloupe and Martinique.
Earlier, another president,
Chilean Sebastián Piñera Echeñique, told Medina that he hoped the two
countries’ “productive” bilateral agenda, including the commitment to Haiti, would
continue.
He singled out the high
level of cooperation that has been achieved with the Haitian people and their
authorities, with a commitment to solidarity. He aid that he was sure that this
agenda would continue developing during the Medina administration.

I've stated it before and I'll say it again: The most uplifting, most efficient strategy to upgrade the living standards of poor Haitians is to give them a VISA to live & work in a First world nation. Automatically, all the infrastructure deficits and institutional weaknesses of their prior life in Haiti are eliminated!
Haitian families will be able to have their children go to schools that have good staffing and all the means to further their children's educational achievement. Potable water and good sanitation will also solve the issues of cholera and other illnesses.
