VATICAN CITY.- The Catholic Church’s 115 cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel Wednesday evening selected their colleague from Argentina Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new Pope, who chose the name Francis to lead the world’s 1.2 billion faithful.

The white smoke signaled that the cardinals chose Bergoglio to succeed Benedict XVI in the 5th balloting.

The new pontiff is considered a reformer and adheres to a humble lifestyle.

FILE. The thousands of the faithful waiting for the white smoke that signals a selection of a Pope in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday evening got their wish, as the cardinals sent the message that they succeeded in the voting.

Under a steady drizzle the people under umbrellas in the historic square unleashed an unanimous cheer, which shook the front of the Sistine Chapel.

Gringo, he seems to be a hardliner with possible ties to Argentina's military junta that conducted the Dirty War in said country. Time will tell, though.

All kidding aside -- and despite the fact I don't drink the Catholic Church cool aid -- I must say congratulations to the people of Argentina and to the true believers from the Western Hemisphere.

His biography is quite wonderful ...he is a Jesuit ,who has lived a very humble life ,cooking for himself and travelling on public transport and always speaking about the need of social justice. He is known as a humbleman and I think that there is great signifence that he chose the name of St Fransis the first after Saint Francis of assisi , the patron saint of animals and the environment .I cannot find any bad word written about him and it must have been very difficult living for so many years in such a country as Argentina that has lurched from right to left sooften and created so many horrors.
He is not pro abortion but what catholic is but I have noticed when in BA , that condoms are available everywhere and the governemnt is pro gay life,,so maybe the new Pope lets some things slide by that are best let slide by

The election of this far right pope, that was a supporter of the nightmarish military junta in Argentina, responsible for thousands of deaths, and on top of that a jesuit, couldn't be worse news for the DR.
The jesuit priests in the DR have always had a record of meddling in DR internal affairs, from the time of Juán Bosch, where he was deposed, by the lobbying of a jesuit priest, fast forward to 2013, when the jesuit priests are pro DR-Haiti unification, and illegal haitian documentation.
The cardinals also chose this old man, maybe thinking about the next election, which should not be too far off, considering his advanced age, and of course weighing the fact that LA has the greatest number of Catholics, than all other continents.

Many qualified observers note that after the last nazi pope Benedict, whose reign was a disaster, the military branch of the vatican, which are the Jesuits, orchestrated this subliminal coup d' etat, to impose order and put the reformers in a short leash.
The catholic church can not save themselves from the disillusionment of the past two popes, that have been devoid of charisma, or any testicular fortitude to put together the needed changes, to bring this oldest monarchy, back from the middle ages to the 21ST century.

DK (Semana Santa is coming),

Time for you to confess all your iniquities and deviated, evil and dirty thoughts. The unstoppable clock of /time life keeps ticking against you, Time to repent and confess all of those perverted acts of pedophile, that you had committed against those helpless, naive children in the country that embraced you and sheltered you. You are not “off the hook yet”.

He is not far right , he did not support the cruel murderous military rule,he has nothing to do with the Jesuits here on the border, and at 76 and looking very fit he is not so old , and you have not the slightest idea what the conclave thought ..so all the first contribution from Generoso is is not based on any fact but on imagination.
In the second contribution,Benedict has given ground on condom use , the Jesuits are not the miltary wing ,,,too much Dan Brown ,,,but are the most educated and charisma runs a very long way behind the ability to take good decisions .
Well, I am prepared to give Francis an opportunity and will do as he asked and pray for him

The reporter needs to check his facts. Saying the new pope will lead a church of 1.2 million people is kind of funny. There are more faithful than that in the DR alone.

There is much in the Catholic church to condemn, but there is also much good done by it as well. Too bad people are incapable of recognizing or acknowledging that too. To allege all priests are pedophiles makes about as much sense as suggesting all Americans use their AR-15's to blow away school kids.

Oh, really?..Didn't know that. Some day, I'll get a portrait of Saint Francis and light a few candles.
I'll get on my knees and pray to have my methane digester become a reality. This will help the environment and make money to help liberate the poor horses in SD from extreme abuse by the human animals....Amen.

You must be mistaken, Dready,

If the Vatican says he lives "adheres to a humble lifestyle" then is must be true. All the stories about his collaboration with dictators, torturers and murderers in Argentina must be satanic lies.

DT - its "1.2 BILLION Catholics".

You are still counted by the Vatican as a Catholic even if you denounce your faith (and commit the Canonical-law crime of Apostasy - death penalty not so frequent these days). The only way off the list is through excommunication and even Hitler didn't qualify for that. (Gobbels was the only Nazi war criminal excommunicated from the Catholic Church - it was for marrying a Protestant.)

elBuscoon,
Before the government opened a health clinic in our village, the doctor operated from the Catholic church building, which paradoxically was the collection point for free government contraceptive pills and condoms - I'm not joking!

Incidentally I have been to the gift shop in the Vatican and it is huge - about the size of a supermarket. I believe the Vatican is now required to pay tax to the Italian government, but only on income earned in Rome, less deductible expenses of course.
