The reporter needs to check his facts. Saying the new pope will lead a church of 1.2 million people is kind of funny. There are more faithful than that in the DR alone.

You are still counted by the Vatican as a Catholic even if you denounce your faith (and commit the Canonical-law crime of Apostasy - death penalty not so frequent these days). The only way off the list is through excommunication and even Hitler didn't qualify for that. Before the government opened a health clinic in our village, the doctor operated from the Catholic church building, which paradoxically was the collection point for free government contraceptive pills and condoms - I'm not joking!

Incidentally I have been to the gift shop in the Vatican and it is huge - about the size of a supermarket. I believe the Vatican is now required to pay tax to the Italian government, but only on income earned in Rome, less deductible expenses of course.
