Five years after deadly quake, Pope calls for conference on Haiti

Vatican City. – Pope Francis for Saturday called for a conference on Haiti five years after the quake that devastated its capital and caused more than 200,000 deaths in the Caribbean country of 10 million, the Vatican announced Friday, AP reports.

The tremor epicentered near the capital Port-au-Prince destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure, thousands of homes and every hospital on the island.

The conference will be held in the Vatican," on the Pope’s desire to maintain attention over a country still suffering the consequences of the disaster and to reiterate the Church’s closeness with the Haitian people in this phase of reconstruction."

"It will be above all an opportunity to take stock of the aid to Haiti and analyze the results of the projects undertaken from 2010 to date," said a statement from the Holy See.

The conference is organized by the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum," the Pontifical Commission for Latin America and Haiti’s bishops.
