Slams ICE arrests and raids targeting DREAMERs

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement regarding last night’s DREAMER arrest and ongoing targeted raids conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“As a former DREAMER and as a father, I am outraged by ICE enforcement actions to round up immigrants, issue deportations without due process, and conduct raids targeting and terrorizing the immigrant community.

“Wake up, Republicans! This is President Trump's new America, and we should all be scared.

“In the past week, ICE has detained nearly 700 undocumented immigrants, including the mother of two U.S. citizen children, and just yesterday, a 23-year-old DREAMER with no criminal record who was taken from his father's home.

“I am outraged and I am sad, as this is not the America that I know!

“In the words of poet Robert Burns, a man’s inhumanity to man makes countless thousands mourn, and the manner in which these individuals are being plucked from their homes, families, and communities during ICE raids is unnerving, wrong, and simply inhumane.

“I say to the President and my Republican colleagues in Congress, these are my constituents, they are your constituents, they are human, not cattle, and our approach to immigration reform should take into account the human elements involved when detaining these individuals under a false pretense of our national security.

“Our immigrant community is made up of hard-working people with families, friends, and neighbors who love them. As a United States Congressman, I say to the immigrant community under attack, to the mothers and fathers who are in distress, and to the DREAMERs who are unsure of their future, that rest assured, I will fight for you until there is nothing left in me to ensure you are safe, these raids end, and our country is back on track as the beacon of freedom and opportunity for which America is best known.”

Prince Charles has been saying the same thing for weeks..these current immigration policies have the same undertones as Hitler's , before the war started . The only difference, for now, is that Trump is inward thinking whereas Hitler wanted conquests outside Germany .

I do not think people are reading the statement sufficiently well ..The point he was making was that deportation was without due process . I am a strong believer that everyone, these days , needs some form of documentation but each country has its own protocol that should be followed .

Why is this clown mixing ILLEGALS with IMIGRANTS? True this country was made up with immigrants people who came here legally and went along with the process, what this man is suggesting is that we should just leave things as it is and continue with our daily life, No you DREAMER things need to be changed enough is enough when you're an ILLEGAL here you're already committing a crime what part of this law you don't understand????? ThIS law was always there but it wasn't enforced fully, breaking up families?? Then take your family with you simple, you had the chance living here ILLEGALY for so long and not giving a thought to get your s--t together and be legalized SO who's fault was that??? You never thought that this day wil come right?? Well now live with the consequences though luck, and take your anchor babies with you ADIOS!!

From: Dominican Republic, Trump is President & black Caucus can't save the illegal Haitians. Told you Hillary would not win. You cannot steal citizenship you're not entitled to

So many inaccurate statements here. Where do I begin? I disagree with Espaillat. There is due process in US deportation proceedings.

@ PuntaCanaMike: What is the process to deport Haitians from DR? And what exactly lacks due process. Keep in mind that the United States has a common law system based on British laws and the Dominican Republic has a civil code system based on French laws.

So the "due process" will naturally be carried out differently despite so many people expecting DR to model theirs against the American system.

@ Laman did you just call illegal immigrants in the US criminals? Did I understand that correctly? And if so, can you elaborate what crime they committed?

As for "getting your shit together" that part is not accurate. Due to current US immigration law a large portion of illegal immigrants cannot change their status in the U.S. Unlike DR, who was so generous with its regularization process.

As for taking their family with them, it's not always so simple. Sometimes the government does not allow them to do so. Instead they split up the family.

Well technically not all are (BAD HOMBRES) ok but they are breaking our laws just for being here illegaly, as for them to become a legal resident they new that before even crossing our border that they have no chance, and they never even gave a damn to even try, there is the right and the wrong way of coming to "America"so they chose the easy path knowing that they can stay here and not being asked to leave, but that's just changing and this was a wake up call, most of these people from our southern border won't even learn our language nor do respect our laws, trust me I live in a Sanctuary city and I know what I'm talking about, should I feel bad for them? Yes and no I have seen the good and the bad in these people, will this be a good thing? I don't know If this is just isolation or patriotism or just simply good old Politics as usual....

*** Illegal aliens are not "immigrants" as they are often incorrectly called. To be an "immigrant", a person must first apply for permanent residency, then wait months or years for the process to begin. If successful, and permanent residency is eventually granted, then a person becomes an "immigrant".

If a person just simply enters a country without first being granted permission, they are not "immigrants", they are trespassers; the same applies to living on someone's property without permission; that also is trespassing. Setting-up residence on land, which is trespassed upon, does not convey a "right" to stay there simply because the person decides to stay.

@Laman fair enough with your comment about what an immigrant means. That is true. Immigrant is a very specific legal term.

As for the "bad hombres" comment, that's funny that you are quoting Trump now. The problem with Trump's comment is that it somehow implies that it's only Hispanics who are illegal. There are many illegal from Europe, Asia, black Caribbean, etc.

The word criminal ALSO has a very specific legal meaning. It's reserved for those break a criminal law.

Entering the country illegally by for example crossing the border or overstaying a visa makes one an "illegal immigrant," "illegal alien," "undocumented immigrant" what have you.

But that is not a CRIMINAL offense. The person broke a civil law and not a criminal one.

Some people are simply not eligible to come to the United States as immigrants. It does not matter if they wait as long as 50 years.

If they don't have a financee or spouse who can petition for them, a parent, child, brother, sister, half-sibling who can petition for them. If they are not a qualified professional, a qualified individual with the right kind of job, then they are not eligible.

Unless of course they fell into other exceptions, like a refugee or asylee. Or a Cuban who entered before wet foot, dry foot and dusty foot ended.

What Adriano is saying sounds good on paper , but immigration laws in the usa are broken and weak, they have to do what they have to , in order to bring stability back to the country . To many gangbangers , criminals , drug dealers come from these south American countries , you reap what you sold at the end of the day.
